![]() Winterĭuring the winter, most squirrels are hibernating or sleeping a lot. It’s not uncommon for them to stay in their dens when the weather turns windy or stormy. However, you won’t find them outside when it’s pouring down rain, because if their fur becomes soaked, it’s harder for them to control their body temperature. Their bushy tail can be flipped over their body to help provide them protection from the rain, kind of like an umbrella for us. It’s not unusual to see a squirrel foraging for food during a light rain. Just like you and I, there are certain elements that they try to avoid to protect themselves. But you might want to know if they also come out in different weather elements such as the rain, winter, summer, and etc. If you’re sitting on your deck enjoying your morning coffee, you won’t have a hard time seeing them, especially, if you’ve set up your yard to attract squirrels. During the light hours, they will spend their days foraging for food and water. Squirrels are diurnal, which means that that they are active during the day and sleep at night like humans. (we’ll cover this more in depth later on) Do Squirrels Eat At Night? However, all species of the flying squirrels active at night and are strictly nocturnal. The common Eastern Grey squirrel does not come out at night, the best times to see them at your feeder are in the early morning hours or in the evening. ![]() ![]() It was getting late and starting to rain, it got me thinking, “do squirrels come out at night? If you’re like me, I love watching the wildlife play in my backyard, that’s why I thought I’d share some tips on what they do at night and their sleeping habits. The other evening I was sitting out in the back porch watching the squirrels at the feeder.
